Born in Saskatchewan, CanadaMs. Gibson began painting in 2009 after spending time working with a gifted artist and teacher in the south of France. Following her time in Provence, she attended classes at L’Ecole des Beaux-arts in Paris. She continues to develop her skills in oils and acrylics and considers herself both an abstract and figurative painter. Although her work often includes recognizable imagery, she is not inclined toward documenting reality or in defining detail. Her interest is in creating works that contain an element of mystery which encourages viewers to complete the experience with their own unique responses. Through her paintings she hopes to convey emotion, elicit compassion, or communicate a metaphysical sense of being.
Samba Beatacrylic on canvasInspired by dancers of the Salgueiro samba school in Rio de Janeiro, these gestural paintings vibrate with the motion and rhythm of the city. In a recent NYTimes article on Roberto Burle Marx, the great Brazilian landscape architect whose 1970 Copacabana shoreline design is celebrated world-wide, writer Holland Cotter states, "You don't walk the promenade, you dance it; its visual rhythms have a samba beat." Requiem for a Condemned Queen acrylic on canvasThe Belleview Biltmore has graced us with its presence for more than a century. The hotel is to many a place of memories, a reference point, a touchstone in an otherwise rapidly changing world. For others it is a place of visual interest, an architectural wonder, and a source of magical delight. As with all things, however, time has taken its toll on the White Queen of the Gulf and its days are numbered. The Biltmore has grown old with neglect and now there is discord in its once lyrical qualities. A sense of impending doom is evident in the rhythm of its gables, the light of its façades, and the shadows of its eaves. My motivation in these paintings is to convey the sentiment of the end of an era and the impending loss of an irreplaceable heritage…the bittersweet ballad of a life well lived.Tempora mutantur et nos mutamus in illis; times change and we are changed with them.
